I started reading
Diary of a Wimpy Kid this past weekend. My first thoughts about this kid were that he was: 1. hilarious and 2. kind of a brat. Greg is just starting Middle School and is very focused on his "image." He thinks his parents are uncool and gets embarrassed easily. He makes me laugh because he has such a typical preteen attitude. In the beginning, he mentions being confused by girls because, in Elementary School, it was simply the boys who ran the fastest that "got all the girls." Now in Middle School, there are more factors that complicate it. What upsets me most about Greg is how mean he is to his "best friend" Rowley. Rowley does not care about his image like Greg does and often does things that embarrass Greg. One day, Rowley approached Greg in the hallway to ask him if he wanted to come over and play. Greg's response was, "I don't know how many times I have to tell him that people in middle school say 'hang out.'" He is worried that Rowley is going to drag him down the social ladder.
I love how we, as readers, get to be inside Greg's head. We know all of his thoughts, worries, ideas, etc. He is just a boy trying to figure out Middle School, and that can be really scary for a kid.
So far, it has made for an entertaining read! I think Greg is going to learn some valuable lessons about friendship and family along the way.
Update: Book is finished. I am disappointed because Greg really did not seem to learn any lessons, no matter what he faced. He thought he was never in the wrong and everyone else was. There were a few parts that I thought were entertaining, but not overly impressed.
